Trump Announces Short Russia–Ukraine Ceasefire
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has announced a temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, alongside a large-scale prisoner exchange, in what he described as a possible step toward ending the ongoing conflict, according to reports.
In a statement posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the ceasefire would run from May 9 to May 11 and would include the exchange of 1,000 prisoners of war from each side.
He characterized the agreement as a potential turning point, expressing hope that it could mark “the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought war.”
Trump also noted that both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had agreed to the arrangement following what he described as direct involvement in requesting the pause in fighting.
According to reports, a senior aide to the Russian president confirmed the ceasefire extension and prisoner swap agreement, describing it as an expansion of an earlier temporary truce.
The US president linked the timing of the agreement to broader symbolic significance, referencing World War II commemorations and suggesting that both Russia and Ukraine were historically connected to those events.
Trump further stated that ongoing diplomatic discussions were aimed at achieving a more permanent resolution to the conflict, which he described as one of the largest and most destructive wars since World War II.
In follow-up remarks, he indicated openness to extending the ceasefire beyond the initial three-day period, depending on the progress of negotiations.
He also suggested that US diplomatic teams could be dispatched to Moscow again if it was deemed useful for advancing peace efforts.
The announcement comes amid continued international efforts to reduce hostilities and explore potential frameworks for longer-term negotiations between the two sides.
