US Warships Cross Strait of Hormuz After Reported Iranian Assault

(MENAFN) According to reports, two US Navy destroyers successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz and entered the Persian Gulf following what was described as a coordinated Iranian attack involving missiles, drones, and small boat activity.

The vessels reportedly included the USS Truxtun and USS Mason, which were supported by military aircraft during the passage. Defense sources indicated that the ships came under multiple forms of attack while navigating the strategic waterway, but neither was hit during the incident.

In the same operation, two US-flagged commercial ships also completed passage through the strait without being harmed, as part of a broader maritime initiative involving increased security measures for shipping in the region.

The mission is linked to a US-led effort designed to ensure safe navigation through the waterway, amid heightened tensions and repeated threats to maritime traffic.

Iranian officials have previously warned that foreign military forces could face consequences if operating in the area, while also emphasizing that political disputes cannot be resolved through military means. They have pointed to ongoing diplomatic engagement efforts as a preferable path forward.

The situation unfolds against a backdrop of sustained regional instability following earlier military escalations earlier in the year. Those events triggered retaliatory actions, disrupted maritime security, and led to temporary ceasefire arrangements that have not yet resulted in a permanent settlement.

Since then, naval operations and escort measures have increased in the area, reflecting continued concerns over security in one of the world’s most critical shipping corridors.
