Trump Blocks TSA Reopening as Airport Delays Persist

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has turned down a proposal to reopen the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) despite long lines and delays at airports, as stated by reports.

The plan aimed to provide funding for the entire Department of Homeland Security (DHS), excluding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which Democrats have refused to fund without new limits on immigration enforcement. TSA operates under DHS.

The proposal was initially presented to Trump by White House aides. Following this, Senate Majority Leader John Thune discussed the plan with the president and later brought it to fellow Republicans on Capitol Hill. Some Republicans viewed the idea as a potential way to resolve the funding stalemate.

Under the plan, ICE funding would have been addressed separately through a party-line reconciliation bill, which would not require Democratic support.

DHS has been partially shut down for over a month, with essential operations like TSA continuing while many employees work without pay. Republicans hoped that funding less contentious DHS components could gain Democratic approval while immigration negotiations continue.

Despite these efforts, Trump ultimately rejected the proposal, as he indicated in a post on Truth Social Sunday night.
